winter time in high park, December 15, 2010 , shakurasaida@hotmail.com

i have enjoyed walking in high park with my dog for many years in all types of weather and i thank all the staff for the care and upkeep of the trails and the park in general. I have one major complaint that I feel very strongly about for many reasons: would you tell me the reason that the park uses so much salt on the pathways? i understand that you have to take into consideration the safety of the individuals walking through your park, but the amount of salt makes it one more place that is unavailable to me during winter months unless i am willing to allow these large pieces to cut into my dogs' paws. There are areas that look like salt has just been dumped down without consideration for how much is actually neccessary to do the job. i also curious about the ecological impact that this product has on the water/pond, plant and animal life? are there no other cost and environmentally effective alternatives? i realize it might be messier, but what about gravel? do you need community support in order to start a different environmental initiative? if that is the case, please contact me i and i will gladly assist in any way possible. thank you for your time-shakura s'aida

High Park duck rescued, December 9, 2010 , posted by Bonnie , ducklover@live.com

Clean up debris, November 27, 2010

I live at Parkside and Westminster. Directly across from us in the park is a discarded pile of cardboard and blankets made this summer by a transient or homeless person. Now that the leaves are gone, it's highly visible and unsightly as well as a possible fire hazard. Can someone with the park take care of removal or should I contact the city? I would remove it myself but there's too much to move. It should be done soon before it freezes and becomes too difficult to remove.

Study Finds Cell Towers Are Bad For Trees, November 20, 2010 , posted by Sharon

Hi there,

I hope Wifi is nevr installed in High Park. This Dutch study says it's bad for trees.

Thanks.

'Mobile internet is bad for trees'
Friday 19 November 2010

Electromagnetic radiation from mobile phone masts and wifi internet is having a negative effect on trees, according to various newspapers, quoting research by Wageningen University.

The reports say researchers subjected 20 ash trees to emissions from six wifi access points over a three-month period and found that the leaves closest to the source withered and fell off. Sweet corn subjected to the same emissions failed to grow properly.

The research was reportedly set up after officials from Alphen aan den Rijn council noticed strange markings and growth patterns on trees in the town, which were not due to a virus or bacterium.

Further research showed that the symptoms, which include strange growths, are prevalent all over the western world. Some 70% of trees in Dutch urban areas have the symptoms, compared with just 10% five years ago when Alphen officials noticed them, the papers said.

Memorial tree..., November 11, 2010 , posted by S. , staceyasl@hotmail.com

Hello... I would like to know if it is possible to plant a tree in high park in memory of someone? My best friend lost her baby almost one year ago and my group of friends would like to mark the day somehow. Planting a tree could be a lovely way to say we remember her and it could be a place for our friend to visit as the tree grows. Does anyone know how to arrange such a thing legally?

Wild Boars in High Park Zoo, October 22, 2010 , posted by Steve Silver , unclevevie@telus.net

I'm sure I can remember that as a child in the 1950's, I saw Wild Boars at the High Park Zoo. I remember seeing a Boar come charging down the slope, and slamming into the chainlink fence of the enclosure. Can anybody tell me if this memory is accurate? If my memory is indeed accurate, can anybody tell me what years they were present in the zoo?

Bird ID, October 13, 2010 , posted by Adrian , akrhodes@live.ca

I saw a bird at the southeast corner High Park, up the hill west of the Lower Duck Pond.

It was a little larger than a chickadee. It had a yellowish belly, with a tan back. It also had a small bill, not specialized. In addition it seemed to have two black bands on its head, above and below its eye. I thought I was looking at a shrike, but am not sure.

It was foraging in the brush and leaves, probably for berries.
As well, there seemed to be a few of them, but not flocking. It made a sort of pip sound as a call. In addition, I think I saw it on the trunks of trees in the area.

Any ideas on what it was?

Thanks.

High Park Pond, October 10, 2010 , posted by Alicia Turner , acturne@hotmail.com

High Park pond is such a hideous, polluted mess. It would be nice if someone actually enforced the no-feeding-the-birds bylaw and issued fines. Most families come ready with bags of bread even though this is prohibited, and prohibited for a good reason. Wouldn't it be lovely to have a pond that doesn't look like chocolate milk with garbage floating in it?

Also, I find it sad that some parents teach their young kids to ignore clearly stated regulations. It's just a bad start....

Picnic areas, September 3, 2010 , posted by Jerry Hodge for HPCAC

Hi, I am the coordinator for the Welcome Centre and we have been getting some flak about picnic sites and permit bookings. We've been working with the Park staff to clarify the locations of the sites in the
tablelands north of the Grenadier Restaurant because there is one less site than marked there. Sites #7 and #8 have posts and locations correctly placed on the park maps but #9 seems to have been orphaned i.e. no tables and no post! After our discussions with Park staff we have decided to recommend the maze as site #9 until the end of the year. It's not ideal, but it works. Remember permits have priority and don't use campfires, charcoal or fire bricks (fire hazard and clean-up problem) Portable gas bbq's and Coleman's are OK. Enjoy!

For example we're going to local restaurants, and supermarkets to convince them to use materials such that are more environmentally friendly (i.e. staying away from polyesterine/ styrofoam containers). In addition to this we want to get closer to nature and learn about many things plants and wildlife have to bring to our planet/everyday lives. I was wondering if you provide or can provide some tours/ nature walks in which someone will guide us through? It would be much appreciated.

Great park and people, July 28, 2010 , posted by Stephanie , steal@cogeco.ca

Hi there.
Just thought I would let you know about the wonderful experience my friends and I had at your park yesterday, July 27th. We all met up at Picnic area #3. There was a group of kids with a few of the staff in the wading pool. The staff made a point of making sure our kids were included in a water fight and spashing and having a great time. They were also allowed to participate in a water balloon fight. It was very much appreciated and the kids had a great time. What a wonderful thing for the staff to do with kids that weren\\\'t \\\'an official part of their group.\\\'
We also visited the zoo. There was a man there that walks the path every day. The staff knows him. He took time out to talk to our kids about the animals. What they ate, their personalities, their names. It was neat to see the animals rush to the fence when they saw this man coming!!! So kind of him to take the time with our kids and share his knowledge. Everyone learned alot. If you happen to see this man, please tell him the group on Tuesday, at about 5 pm, with four kids and two adults had a great time and said thanks!!!

We were very pleased when it was opened but in just a very few years we've seen it steadily erode to resemble a derelict building. The security enclosure and main door is full of graffiti, the paint is badly peeling on every part of the structure that's wood, there are no longer any hanging baskets (the ones that were there were abandoned and left to rot in their pots), and no repair was ever done when a nearby tree fell onto the structure supporting the hanging baskets a couple of years ago. The roof is covered with moss and appears that it will have to be replaced much sooner than it should. This is one of the first structures anyone (i.e. first-time visitors) see when entering the main park entrance from Bloor Street. It's a disgrace and shameful that this has been allowed to happen, especially since the city's largest park should be a role model for the rest of Toronto's parks. Who is running this operation and when will it be fixed?

Re: Snake in the park, May 31, 2010 , posted by Site admin

Dear Linda, thank you for sharing the snake-story. If you spent more time roaming around in the forests, marshlands and riverbanks of Ontario with your eyes wide open to nature you'd find that there are a LOT of snakes all over the place, wild and free, proud and beautiful. They are infinitely more scared of you than you are scared of them so if you do nothing and give them a chance to "go" away they will. But like all animals (and humans), they'll do anything to defend themselves and save their lives if they are attacked and cornered (although 99% of them can not possibly harm humans): so the strategy is simple: leave them be. Maybe take a picture to remind you of the diversity of species and the beauty of nature and be graceful that you are part of it.

I saw a snake in the mini zoo roaming free! It was soooo scary! , May 29, 2010 , posted by linda , noor

im a student who went on a feild trip with the rest of my class to high park on may 5th. me and my friends really wanted to see the mini zoo and so after having lunch we made that our next stop. we enjoyed looking at the different animals and when we were leaving the mini zoo we saw a snake! It wasn't in a cage like all the other animals, it was just slithering around in the open! This is what happened, my teacher my friends and i were happily laughing and talking and leaving the mini zoo when all of a sudden one of my friends screamed "AAAAAAHH! SNAKEEEE!!!!" of course i didnt believe her at first i mean come on a snake out in the open, free, not in a cage? But when i looked down i had a heart attack! THERE ACTUALLY WAS A SNAKE! AND IT WASN'T IN A CAGE! YES, RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF ME WAS A SNAKE! And im a person who hates all reptiles ESPECIALLY SNAKES! Im traumatised by them! And of course i wasnt the only one who had looked down and was shocked to actually find a snake right there in our feet!!!!! I started hyperventilating! I was soo shocked for a few seconds i didn't move! It wasnt until my friends pulled me that i started running up the steps leading out of the mini zoo! i cannot explain how i felt, what a scary experience it was for me, i mean of course i've seen snakes but that's on tv where i know im safe sitting on my couch and i know that it's not gonna come out of the tv or in the zoo where they are in a closed space not out in the open! But i NEVER would have thought i would ever come face to face with a snake roaming freely! It was the talk of the year!"Oh My God you know we went to high park and saw a SNAKE!!" I had been having the best time at high park and it was going to be my favourite feild trip up until we saw that snake! And for me that SNAKE changed everything! I still say it was a fun trip and i feel really cool when i tell people i saw a real live snake but i would think twice before going there again. I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT HAPPENED!

SAFE AT NIGHT?, May 20, 2010

Hi,
I'm moving into the area and I've heard a lot of mixed comments about sketchy activity taking place in the park at night.
Is it safe to walk along Bloor street on the outskirts of the park at say 3 AM? It's a beautiful, relatively affluent area so I'm assuming it's been cleaned up a bit.

Please be honest and give me some tips :)
Much appreciated,
Thanks

re: dogs off leash comment, May 18, 2010 , posted by Site Admin

Whoever left the comment about dogs not being allowed off leash outside the park and saying that the proper authorities have been notified: Good for you! I'm glad that you have lots of free time and thank you for caring about the safety of people visiting High Park. How about the "proper authorities" first make sure that there are no cigarette butts EVERYWHERE and beer bottles and other garbage and cars don't speed and people don't contaminate the waters with all sorts of junk and once all of the above is taken care of, only then start issuing $500+ fines for decent people who walk their 10 year old dogs off the leash.

May 18, 2010

Actually you are not allowed to let your dog off your leash AT ALL in off-leash areas. And I have already notified the proper authorities that this website is promoting illegal off-leash activity in High Park.

Cherry blossoms are over, May 4, 2010

This post is to confirm that the Sakura (cherry) trees are no longer in bloom for 2010. They are very, very, very unlikely to start blooming again so please stop asking if they are still in bloom or not. They aren't:( Further inquiries in 2010 about cherry blossoms will be ignored.

cherry blossom, May 3, 2010

hey.. any of you visited the park this weekend? i am planning to visit the park next weekend and was wondering if the cherry blossoms are still there

Cherry trees on May 1, May 1, 2010

There are still some flowers on the trees but it's not as nice as last week and the week before. Not as enjoyable. But the trees are beautiful nevertheless. Even if you missed the early blossoming of the Sakura trees, there is so much to see and do in High Park that by the time you leave you'll forget that you went there for the Cherry blossoms. I'm not even sure why it's such a big deal....my neighbour's garden has a cherry tree...no Japanese...but it looked georgeous when it was blooming. And other trees are also in bloom. Just as nice to me, I like them all equally.

April 30, 2010

Can anybody please give some idea which part of the park still has Sakura in bloom? I want to go this weekend..

Well, he has continued to take secret photos of women and girls in the park nearly every week. I even saw him taking a photograph of me! I was so scared that I left the park immediately and I'm afraid to return. He is a large man with a shaved head and he has a large 'Dogue de Bordeaux' with him at all times. I would like to go back to the park but I'm too afraid. What should I do?

Feeding animals in the Zoo , March 10, 2010

On 3 different occasion I have been in the Zoo with my small children and encountered a man, the same man, feeding the animals and encouraging young children to do so. He also seems to be too friendly with the little children, especially the boys. As a parent this makes me very uncomfortable and a bit concerned for our neighbourhood, and the children who play in our parks.
Perhaps the Zoo keepers should be advising this man to not feed the animals. He seems to be there between the hours of 1:00-3:00pm. The first time I came across him I thought nothing of it, but now I have been there 3 times and it just seems like strange behaviour too me, and my instinct tells me that something is not right about him.

feeding zoo animals, February 20, 2010

Greetings,

We are writing to you to express our concern over something that we have witnessed in High Park at least five times in the past year. Every time we've gone to the High Park zoo, we've seen a man who does not appear to work for the park feeding the animals through the fences and encouraging small children to do the same by offering them his food. There are signs clearly stating that this is not acceptable behaviour and it causes us concern to see it. We're certain that it's been the same person each time. He's a middle-aged, caucasian man carrying a blue plastic shopping bag containing food.

We thought you'd want to know.

The street car stop area itself and its surrounding area also tends to be dirty. I was plannibng to do some cross country skiing in the park as I haver done in past years. Now I live some distance from the park and have no knowledge of the amount of snow available on the ski trails or if it is apt for such usage.

Perhaps you would provide some encouragement and e-mail me with some information as to the condition of the snow base available for crosss country skiing on
the designated trails.

yours thankfully,
David Henderson
