coyotes/deer, December 9, 2018 , posted by john , johnjenglish@rogers.com

within the last month while running I saw a small deer at the north east part of the park near the run off pond. Last week I saw a darker coyote near Grenadier pond early in the morning. We both just stared at each other for a minute (deer and coyote) and then went our own way. While running along the path at the northern part of Grenadier pond I noticed three men feeding the ducks. I later was told they were capturing and killing them, does anyone know if this is true?

High Park Visit, November 11, 2018 , posted by Kelly , kbucci79@rogers.com

Hello,

I am interested in visiting High Park this week or next week. I was trying to get there earlier, but my schedule and the weather did not cooperate. I was originally planning on cycling but since the weather has been rather cold and rainy over the last few weeks, I have stored the bike for the upcoming winter season. I do still want to see High Park this year instead of waiting until next Spring. I was wondering, if I take the trackless train, will I be able to see a good portion of the park? I know I would see the whole park if I could bike it, but since I will be on foot and I think this is a very big park, I want to be able to see as much of it as I can. I would like to see Colborne Lodge, the zoo, the restaurant and maybe do the odd trail. I know the train stops at a good number of stops (I've seen the website), but will I also be able to do all of this and the odd trail within 4-5 hours (and partially on foot)? Or, should I wait until the spring and bring my bike? Thanks.

re: fall leaves, October 16, 2018

A how-to guide to fall leaves watching at High Park:

Step one is to find out if leaves are turning colourful already at High Park: Look at other trees outside High Park and if the leaves aren't all green then the trees inside High Park will also be colourful.

Step two is to find a location where to watch the fall leaves inside High Park: Enter High Park then find a tree, stand near the bottom of the tree. Look up.

What used to be a public washroom by the infrequently used plant educatarion centre , October 10, 2018 , posted by Marlene Colgrove , mecolgrove@gmail.com

I have been a regular visitor to High Park for 35 years now.
Although the education centre near Colborne Lodge isn't new, it bothers me that a public washroom is locked up for "occasional use"by school/education programs etc. I think the solution should be that when programs are actually running, the people running them lock the doors or escort the children to the washroom. Otherwise, LEAVE IT OPEN to the rest of the park users. The sign says that "there are other washrooms near Colborne Lodge". I never found any the first time or any other time. You can't use the Lodge facilities and there are no outhouses anywhere. Its a lie.
That further frustrates visitors
It can't very hard and only a minor inconvenience to those running the program to onlý take "ownership" of the washrooms while actually running a program with children. Any adult programs can share the washrooms with the rest of the park users. Please reopen it for ALL THE PEOPLE.

Missing Tabby Cat, October 3, 2018 , posted by Joële Walinga , joelewalinga@gmail.com

Hi,

I'm a Roncesvalles resident and I'm writing because my cat has been out of the house for about 24 hours now. He is an outdoor cat, very adept, grey/silver tabby, but he usually comes home to sleep or have dinner, and hasn't been here since last night. He isn't wearing his collar, and I wanted to reach out in case my biggest nightmare has come true and he has been hurt by some other animal in High Park. He is large, muscular, 8 years old and answers to Pippin.

Can you please keep your eyes open for a cat fitting this description. If you respond to this email, I can follow up with photos for better identification.

You can call me at 647-971-7512.

Traffic control, jogger-cyclist wars, August 3, 2018 , posted by Paul , praymont@gmail.com

Why was the stop sign removed from West Rd. near the entrance to the Park (just south of Bloor St.)? Some drivers don't realize it's still a cross-walk, and they zoom right through without showing any caution. Also, can there be signs to alleviate the chaos of the cycling lane? I jog in the cycling lane and stay well to the right, but is it legal for me to jog in that lane at all? I've noticed that some groups of runners run 3 or 4 abreast in the cycling lane, leaving no room for others and leading to conflicts with cyclists. That's definitely poor etiquette, but is it also illegal?

Alligator-type animal sighting, August 2, 2018 , posted by Milissa , milissa5@hotmail.com

Hello,

I was visiting High Park today with my family and we got off the red park train at Stop #1 (by the Adventure Park). We crossed the street and walked across the grass to sit at a picnic table, which is located right next to a larger picnic seating area (with a roof covering it). It was about 12:00 or 12:10 when we got to the area. The picnic table that we were sitting on is right next to a very bushy area, and one of the picnic table benches backs onto the bushes. Although I didn't see it myself, my mom jumped in surprise when she saw what she described as a small alligator coming out from the bushes towards our table. She then saw it quickly run back into the bushes. We were all pretty startled, so we left the area and went towards the park. I just wanted to bring this to the park's attention. Perhaps others have noticed it as well, but it may be helpful for the park staff to have this information. Thank you.

Aerial Spray- Catapillars, May 25, 2018 , posted by Moi , camoywynter@gmail.com

Good morning,
I was disappointed to see that the small tree catapillars are back this year. I thought the news said you forgot to spray the trees in time last year and so they hatched. I am thinking you should have a set month to spray them before this happens each year.I live in the neighborhood and go to the park daily for exercise. The thing is I am not afraid of any insects except worms and catapillars unfortunately. I have been know to run straight off the side walk and into traffic at the site of them. The catapillars are already hanging off trees into walking path. This is gross. I have seen them crawling up unsuspecting people's shirts as they transfer to hair and clothes when you walk under the trees.
Please do something about this. last year was a bid infestation so much so that I did not go to the park for many months.

Thank you

Don't get the blooming trees, May 13, 2018 , posted by Bob , marcvs.agrippa@gmail.com

Just a few observations...

1. Why is everyone driving into the park expecting to find a spot? You're adding to the congestion and pollution. Use the subway or park on a side street away from the park (Quebec, Glenlake, Pacific...). Too lazy to walk, eh?

2. The trees bloom every year. Nothing special. Why do you bother coming? There's a bunch of Japanese cherry trees on Centre Island. Go there. Or, why not take a walk around your own neighbourhood and admire lilacs, tulips and magnolias?

3. If you *must* swarm around the trees in the park with thousands of other people, PLEASE be mindful of your surroundings. Don't jaywalk, stare into your smartphone screen or act like a zombie. Be aware. The next time I am about to cut down a pedestrian sauntering obliviously in the BIKE LANE, I won't even try to avoid them. Leash your dogs and keep your children away from the road. If you're in the car, don't be driving around the park for an hour like a tool looking for a spot and trying to beat 250 other drivers to it. Exit the park and park elsewhere.

4. Toronto Police: for 2019, block Bloor St between Keele and Ellis,
and allow only pedestrian/bike traffic on weekends between 10 and 6.

I went to them and and suggested it might be rabbit as racons are rarely seen during the day and would normally run away from humans. They laughed as I think I meant it was a rabbit (they were oriental) I tried to explain further but they just kept on smiling and taking pictures. The reason I am telling you this as it was around the cherry blossom trees. Just

Turkey, April 20, 2018 , 198birches@gmail.com

Lately, there were 2 messages describing seeing Turkey in vicinity of BWV and junction. This likely was a wild turkey not an animal from HP Zoo.

If you see this bird again you may try to call TWC for advice but they will not relocate. Another option is calling MNRF or Ontario Wildlife Services. Wild Turkeys occasionally venture into HP area.

Food waste in park, April 18, 2018 , posted by Sophie Farano , faranosophie@gmail.com

Hello,
I was walking my dog today on the trails near the dog park, and she found a lot of food (I think it was bread and chunks of meat?) on the ground, kind of hidden between two mounts of snow. It didn’t look like someone’s garbage, but rather on purpose to feed wild animals (there was really a lot so probably coyotes?). I’m not sure if this is allowed, and thought maybe other dog owners should be warned!

Hi there, I saw somewhere online that the cherry has already blossomed. How and where do we know that if it remained blossomed on a certain day, so we can come visit?? For instance, is it blossomed this Friday?? And how can we keep track without having to email you every time (if you even would know)?

Thank you!!

Cherry Blossoms at High Park: Prediction #3, April 15, 2018 , posted by Nobby , nobbycosmic@yahoo.co.jp

Since my Prediction #2 on April 5, colder than normal temperatures are pushing the blooming further into May. The re-calculated figures show: The beginning of the blooming on May 3 +/-2 days and the full bloom on May 8 +/- 2 days. My predictions are based on purely scientific calculations. For the actual progress of the blooming in real time by observations, there is a comprehensive excellent web page called Sakura Watch by Sakura Steve.

Nope, not yet, you have to wait at least for another 3-4 weeks my friends

Turkey in bloor west, April 13, 2018 , posted by Dawn Cole , dawn_cole@hotmail.com

Hi there. I tried calling 311 and they said they can't catch an animal that isn't confided in a set location. So I am unaware of who to contact.

There was a HUGE turkey walking down windermere near Annette, in the pouring rain near lots of traffic about 20 mins ago. 311 stated it's likely from the high park zoo so I wanted to let you know as it does not seem as though anyone will catch him.

Thank you!

Cherry trees will be in bloom in two weeks, IMO!

Sakura blooming at High Park, April 5, 2018 , posted by Nobby , nobbycosmic@yahoo.co.jp

I sent the prediction #1 of the blooming of the cherry trees at High Park on March 1 to the blooming discussion site. The site, however, seems to be inactive. So, I am posting the prediction #2 here. As of April 4, the calculated figures show the beginning of the blooming on April 27 +/-2 days with the full bloom on May 4 +/-2 days. Since they are more than 3 weeks ahead, there may be some changes but they should not deviate much from the above predictions. Waiver: I do not take any responsibility if the predictions are off though they were within the predicted ranges or very close to them every year.

Hi there,
I’m wondering if anyone has any info about this year’s amazing summer camp in the park - Shakespeare for Kids??
My son went last year and had an amazing time. Had loads of fun and made new friends. I don’t see any info for this year. I believe it was run by Shakespeare in Action and was a collaboration with Shakespeare in High Park.
Thanks.

Wedding , March 16, 2018 , posted by Maggie-Rene Grundy-Glynn , maggierenegg@gmail.com

Hello there, Im planning a wedding in 2020 and I'm just in the middle of trying to find a space for it. We just need a big green open space as the wedding and reception will be in tents. I just have a few questions.
1. Is it even possible to have a wedding in High Park (provided we have the proper permits)?
2. How late can our event run due to noise?
3. If we have our drinking (SOCAN) permits will that be an issue?
4. Do you provide any insurance?

If this is to complicated to answer over email you can reach me at 647-839-5861
Looking forwards to hearing back from you

Cars in the Park, March 14, 2018 , posted by Tyler Floodgate

Hey there,

I've been walking in the park for years now, and recently I've noticed a significant uptick in the amount of vehicle traffic. This reflects the overall increase in traffic in the city. People driving to the restaurant, rink, zoo, etc, makes some sense, but it appears than many people are using it as a shortcut from Bloor to Queensway, or from Parkside to Bloor. Wouldn't it make sense to make this misuse of the park impossible? This is especially pressing, since traffic will only increase in Toronto over the next decade.

Thanks,

My wife and I can no longer visit our favorite park.
We were stalked by two individuals who were intent on provoking us for 15 minutes I called 911 only to be told there was no one available to help. I had to order a taxi to take us home so the individuals could not see my car.
I then came back later to retrieve my car. for now we are afraid to visit High Park.

Litter Clean Up, February 27, 2018 , posted by Lauren , laurendeeyoga@gmail.com

Hello,

I am a resident of the High Park neighbourhood and walk my dog daily in the park. Since last spring I have noticed a lot of litter strewn throughout the park. Today, after walking through the dog off leash area and seeing the same pieces of garbage day after day and month after month I decided to pick up as much of it as I could. All of it was plastic which takes many years if not lifetimes to decompose.

I am wondering what the litter clean up initiative is in High Park? Is anyone from the city taking responsibility for this role?

Thank you,
Lauren

We'd like a life size sculpture of the character Elsa from the movie Frozen in market Canada Day (Feb 19) in High Park. I'm currently working with a vendor to create the sculpture, but wondering if I need to obtain some kind of license or approval from a contact in the park? Let me know, thank you!

dogs in the park, January 29, 2018 , posted by Robert

Reference to John bitten by three dogs and now running with his pit bulls. I saw you with your two dogs. Only thing I can say is have a witness, take pictures if you can. I have seen what a pit bull of their size can do. I do not really agree in what you are doing but what would happen if those other dogs attacked a young child running around in the park. I only hope the dog owners who own those dogs are reading this.

Unstable ice, January 28, 2018 , posted by Emy , Almeida

Dear Sir/ Madam,
I visted the park this morning (Jan 28, 2018), and I saw a man crossing the Grenadier Pond despite all the signs warning about the unsafe ice on the pond.
I took a picture but it’s dark as I was against the sun and far from the person.
Many people may not know English, so I wondered if graphic signs wouldn’t be more effective. An actuall drawgins of someone falling into thin ice.
Let me know if you need the picture.
My regards,
Emy Almeida

dogs running wild, January 27, 2018 , posted by John

I have been running in High Park for 16 years, I have been chased dozens of times and bitten 3 times by dogs in the on lease area. Its not the dogs fault its the owners fault. Last week a very large doberman came at me, I was able to turn in time to protect myself and kicked the dog and hurt it. The owner went crazy on me. I do not run with my two dogs until this week. And by the way they are two 110 lb pit bulls.

coyotes in High Park, January 20, 2018 , posted by Sue , suehayes1225@gmail.com

December through to March is the breeding season for coyotes therefore are very territorial during this time. If you enter their territory during this time with your dogs they of course will be quite interested! I also have two dogs, and earlier this week was 'escorted' out of the territory by a pair of coyotes. Be respectful and give them the space they need and you and your dog will be fine!

coyote, January 2, 2018 , posted by Kathleen Holland , katholland@rogers.com

I live across the street from High Park on Parkside near Garden. I often take my dog to the open area that runs along parkside (where the apple blossom trees are). I took her at about 6pm tonight and was fairly close to the street and saw a coyote it was actually coming towards us, I have an older golden retriever and was quite nervous. I backed away yelling and waving my arms, it started to turn the other way and then came back towards us again. It wasn't until we got to the street curb that it backed away. I was really surprised how assertive it was, is this normal?
