weekend car ban, December 30, 2022 , posted by WES SPIERS , hspiers@rogers.com

What is the reasoning behind the weekend car ban? This effectively denies access to the park for other than locals within walking distance. Why are they so privileged? As a Toronto taxpayer, do my tax dollars not also pay for the park?

Will the park tours be on the 23rd?, December 13, 2022 , posted by Francine , blaidd.bibby@gmail.com

Vehicular traffic in High Park, November 27, 2022 , posted by MJ Bell , grahambell40@gmail.com

I respectfully add my voice to the chorus of those objecting to the complete ban of automobiles in High Park. While I understand the concerns expressed by proponents of the ban, I feel strongly that this action is discriminatory and will unjustly prevent a sector of our population from enjoying access to/benefits of the park experience. I speak from personal experience and for those in our community who rely on family members and friends to provide appropriate transportation into the park. High Park, I believe, is intended for the use of all. A complete ban of cars in the park would ensure that this would/could no longer be the case. As a frequent park user, I have accepted the determination that there are days designated as car free. Please give those reliant on vehicular access and available parking the same fair consideration. Thank you.

Cars on winter weekends, November 19, 2022 , posted by Mare Tiido , marebritton@rogers.com

There has been no discussion with public or announcement or reason for why High Park forbids car entry on weekends in autumn, spring or winter, or anytime other than during cherry blossom time. This is truly heart breaking for me and many others not being able to go to my favourite rock gardens on the days I can, on weekends,as I have not got strength, due to a handicap, to walk there through the park. Shame on you for simply leaving the cherry blossom closure for cars in place year round for no good reason.

Elderly being driven to high park, November 4, 2022 , posted by Ilona Bacal , ilona.bacal@rbc.com

For years I have not been able to bring my disabled mom or meet my elderly father in High Park. They cannot walk and need to be able to drive into the park, park there and enjoy sitting in the park while their grandkids run around. This new law not allowing cars into High Park on weekends is very discriminatory to those who need to be driven into the park or cannot walk or cycle for long periods like others. There needs to be better accessibility for those of us who cannot rely only on walking. We still pay our taxes and need to be able to enjoy the parks on weekends.
Please allow cars to come into the parks, so whole families can enjoy weekends in the park.

High speed cyclists , August 25, 2022 , posted by Ian Hood , patriciahood011@outlook.com

My name is Ian Hood and I represent a large group of people who are against high speed cycling in high park.My goal is to have the park safe for everyone. At present there is a large group of high speed cyclists who don't obey the stop signs and the 20 km speed limit. There have been cases of people being hit and one in particular was a young girl who had her 4 front teeth knocked out. I believe a stand has to be made against these individuals who continue to break the law on a regular basis and are making High Park unsafe for all who enjoy this beautiful park but feel threatened when they go there. I am in constan contact with 11 division about sending officers as much as possible to monitor this problem. I have gone as far as to call the Chief of Police to possibly have two officers attend High Park in a morning to evening basis. I believe this will make it extremely difficult for these high speed cycy to continue on breaking the laws that are in place to protect the people if High Park. Yours truly The Active Ian Hood

Cyclists in off-leash dog path, July 30, 2022 , posted by Jon , jonsufrin@gmail.com

Hello,

There is an issue with cyclists riding too quickly on the paved off-leash dog area that runs parallel to Parkside Drive at the east side of the park.

I believe there should be signs at the entrances to this off-leash area asking cyclists to dismount. It is dangerous not only for dogs who could get hit, but for riders who could fall off their bike if they hit a dog.

This problem is much more noticeable on weekends, when people who are not familiar with the park seem to think it is a bike path.

Please add appropriate signage, thank you.

all public access, July 26, 2022 , posted by paul

Access to a public park should not be restricted to walkers, and bicyclists who have no regard for the rules of the road (perhaps bicyclists need a race track of their own.) The park is a public space. As a supporter of the restaurant in the middle of the park I require parking in the park. Don't shut me out.

car access on week ends, July 26, 2022 , posted by Paul , pauljdhaines249@outlook.com

Pre Covid, I would meet with friends at the restaurant in the centre of the park, with ample parking. The park is large enough to accommodate a bicycle only path way, thus would allow cars to still have access. if bicyclists would obey the rules of the road there would be safe access for us all.

Washrooms are disgraceful, July 19, 2022 , posted by Joseph McAdam , jamcadam@hotmail.com

I had my first visit to High Park in many years. The visit was quite enjoyable until I needed to use the washroom. The washroom at the Bloor Street was absolutely disgusting. I took photos that I will post where I can. I also concur with another respondent that the Portable Washrooms are overflowing and the one I used was last serviced over 3 weeks ago, with no name of the attendant. Toronto will never be a world class tourist site if it doesn't provide adequate facilities for the public. As an example the public washrooms at the waterfront music gardens are portables also.

Tuesday 19 - 3pm ; I was in High Park this afternoon, at the cherryblossoms hill, I saw some left over of what appeared to be a tent's cables and sticks (don't know the name) I tried to gather them when one of the tiny cables poke one finger. Still there - I believe dangerous to humans and animals. on the left side before the pine trees. Please pick it up with gloves. Much appreciated.

closures for cyclists, July 17, 2022 , posted by Diane P Sullivan , sull2951@hotmail.com

Cyclists are pressuring to have High Park closed all week to cars. This discriminates against Seniors and families with strollers who want to go to the Grenadier Cafe and the zoo. Not everyone is able to walk the distance and back to Bloor St. There is no posted schedule for the train.
Cyclists speed around the circle over the speed limit without stopping which is dangerous for all pedestrians.
The Grenadier risks closing if people cannot easily get there. Seniors and families pay taxes to maintain the Park and cannot have easy or safe access.

Large Wasps in West Playground, July 13, 2022 , posted by Alex Ayers , alexandre.ayers@gmail.com

I'd like report the presence of underground wasp nests in the the children's sand play area at the West Playgound. A similar nest is also present along the walk path between the playground and Bloor street. These wasps seem to be borrowing a nest in the sand and flying low. They are large in size - I took a picture and posted it to iNaturaist, it suggests Cicada-killer wasps. These can pose a concern to children an animals as the path and playground have a lot of traffic. 311 was unable to connect me with someone to take a message. Please forward to park superintent and public safety staff. Thank you.

Off Leash Dog areas, July 11, 2022 , posted by Veronica , vero.a.gloria@gmail.com

Hi,

I would like to express a concern about an issue I had this past Saturday while walking in the park with my kid. A man was strolling with his two unleashed big dogs by the west entrance of Spring Rd. One of the dogs jumped into my bag and the owner didn't care about it after getting his attention about this incident. I told him that tbat was an onleaah area and he said it was not, so I told him to read the rules and he answered saying that he knew them. I insisted that it was an on leash area and he keot saying non sense and irrespectful things to me, like that I should walk in a different area if I didn't liked dogs. Well, this man clearly showed that he did not know anything about off leash dog areas rules, even if this incident would had happened within an off leash area, it is dog owners responsability to keep their dogs under control and not wandering around jumping to people. This is the second time that I have a similar incident like this. Could you please install more signs and publish the dog walking rules in different places of the park so people get educated about it? I would appreciate very much your attention to this message. Thank you very much.

Domestification of Llamas, July 11, 2022 , posted by Steve

I have noticed that the one of the information board claims that the llamas were domesticated 4000 years ago by Incas. That is contrary to the scientific/ historical evidence as earliest evidence of Incas date to 1100 A; and, Inca civilization by itself is of the much recent stock. I believe, as I might know or not, that the domestication of the llamas might be attributed to much older cultures than Incas. With hope to find green pasture for everyone, Steve.

Cars in High Park, June 21, 2022 , posted by Barbara

I have heard that there is a discussion at the moment about closing definitely High Park for cars. This is a shocking news. I drive to HP everyday, sometimes twice a day to go to the off leash dog park. In the morning, my time is limited, and I am not the only one. The regular people that I meet there everyday all have a job to go to, and we are all gone by 9:30/10:00. If we can not reach the off leash park, the time to find a parking space outside the park, then walking on leash to the park and back, is going to be much too long. There are also older people driving there for their dogs, they can't walk long distance, or handicapped. What is the city trying to do?

How can the park help stop climate change, June 13, 2022 , posted by Sabrina , Sabrina.sixta@gmail.com

Hello,

Answer: make veggie options more available! (Among many other actions like limiting car traffic =) )

On Friday, the hotdog stand near Jamie Bell play ground finally offered veggie burgers. I asked to order one at approximately 1:30 and they had already sold out. Wow! The demand must have been great. The person working at the hotdog stand told me that I could instead go to Grenadier Cafe to get a veggie burger. However, this is not a very convenient option for people with little children.

To my dismay, I returned today (Monday) and the veggie options were gone. Instead the options were hotdog or pork sausage. Why the change if the demand on Friday was so great?

Other reasons to provide more options other than climate change:
-Hotdog and processed pork are type 1 carcinogens. Is this really what we want to be feeding the current and next generation while offering no other options?
-Hotdogs and processed pork increase the risk of heart disease by 42! (Harvard health) Again do really wish heart disease on the next generation?
-This hotdog stand has a monopoly over the park. If I could open up my own hotdog stand near Jamie Bell Park and offer veggies dogs I would, but I can’t. Instead I am writing this lengthy plea for veggie options.

Have a wonderful day,
Sabrina

Last Friday at the park, June 12, 2022 , posted by KS , nihsgnuyk@gmail.com

Hello, hope you are having a good day :)
I am a regular park user with 2 kids(age 11, 9) and a dog. I’ve been loving and caring high park for many years. My family and I are nature lover and always excited to learn about more about it to respect and protect.
I was walking with my dog around the grenadier pond last Friday morning. When I heard the train is approaching, I moved out of the path and that made my dog and myself got close to geese around the pond. My dog was on the short lish(not a retractable one) and I believe we were at least 2meters away from a group of geese. I turned myself to wave to the kids on the train. The train operator was passing and yelling at me. “YOUR DOG IS SCARING THE GEESE”
I don’t think my dog was that close to scare the geese. The dog was not barking, not running toward to them. Although if this is a problem for geese, the park should educate people in a polite way by putting sign so dog owners can see it clearly or volunteers can educate dog owners. The train was moving so I didn’t have chance to talk to the operator. But this is simply not pleasant getting yelled at the park during a walk. He made me think who is scaring geese? The giant train with loud noise? and it’s even polluting the air… Do you know what I mean? I am not writing here to talk about how harmful the train can be for nature. Everybody deserve to enjoy the park. It would be nice if you make a chance to remind all the people who work at the park(including train operators)how to respect and educate all the park users. Thank you.

Visitors not following rules, May 8, 2022 , posted by Cindy , cin.lam@gmail.com

I'm currently at high park enjoying the cherry blossom season. I want to know why there are no park patrollers or some kind of staff who are available to make sure people are following park rules. I observed a huge amount of people pulling on branches and plucking flowers off of them. There was even an older aged lady who was climbing up a tree! (She also almost fell... And ended up pulling on one of the branches to steady herself)
When I approached the group to tell them how dangerous it was and how they might damage the tree, they were... Most unkind and ignored my warnings. So I ended up taking a picture of them.

Please consider having park patrollers out and about during the cherry blossom season to ensure proper park etiquette.

Hi,
I understand the park has been closed weekends to car traffic. I am unable to walk too far and am missing driving my dog to the dog park for a visit. Is this temporary during covid? If not, are there any considerations for someone like myself?
I’m missing the park. Please let me know. Thank you.
